Despite the frighteningly high frequency of school shootings and the murders of innocent children, neither the public nor the authorities have acted to stop it. Although not a US citizen, I am shocked and disgusted to learn that six students died in the recent killings in Nashville. The blame game that has ensued is both abhorrent and frightening. This is entirely about politics and has nothing to do with the policy. That all depends on how the ARCHAIC 2nd AMENDMENT is interpreted. Perhaps we should consider seriously altering it.
Most likely, this sounds like a rant. Of course, it is beyond the comprehension of any reasonable person what is taking place in the US and why children must suffer due to someone else’s problems.
The main defence put out is the problem with mental health. There is no logical justification for the violent behaviour, except perhaps that those who shoot up schools may have underlying mental health issues. I find the ease of access to guns to be amazing at times. Due to the easy access to firearms in the US, anyone may walk into a school and begin shooting unarmed children who have not yet begun to live their lives. The “side-door” logic sounds so ridiculous. And it’s beyond my infantile imagination to think that a school might be turned into a militarized zone with metal scanners, security cameras, and armed guards. Children should feel safe at school and not worry about being scared by a mentally ill gun-toting killer (usually a man) (please refer to Mother Jones database of mass shootings – if you carefully analyze the data, it will shock you) who wants to kill to prove his manliness. Where are we making a mistake? I concur that school shootings are intricate and complicated. We must also acknowledge the role that societal, cultural, and personal elements play in tragic events.
This country is hell-bent on saving fetuses with heartbeats, yet they have failed to protect the children who grow up from fetuses. How hypocritical is that? The Bible says:
- “You shall not murder” (Deuteronomy 5:17).
- “Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.” (Exodus 23:7)
- Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. (Romans 12:19)
- “Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death.” (Leviticus 24:17)
- “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’” (Matthew 5:21)
If the US is to be a Christian Nation, then it must protect the children as per Bible. We seriously need to look into re-evaluating the 2nd Amendment, where the type of firearms that existed is a lot different from what they are now.
